So. I'm pulling Saints. I really don't care about Indy, they're neither here nor there. But I think I'd like to see Nawlins win. Just for the city, just for the league.
I want my baseball back, that's for damn sure.
The Tar Heels are just so out of whack, I'm not really sure what's going on with them. If Coach'd just settle down on a starting five, a starting five that includes Dexter Strickland and possibly Travis Wear. It seems like right now, due to his experience, Travis is doing better than David. Strickland could be a beast, sometimes he has moments where he looks like Ty used to.
I want my baseball back.
We bought the soundtrack to the third Doc Who season, the one wtih Martha. It's very good. We played it last night at dinner, it felt very epic to eat over that music.
I started writing a short story, just about nothing. We'll see where it goes.
Reading 1776 by David McCullough, what a fantastic book. Have about 70 pages left I think? Would be lovely to finish it today.

So we got inundated, just like the rest of the eastern seaboard, with a lot of snow. It was pretty for the first two days. Now we really just want it gone. Every year I get more and more tired of the cold and more and more ready for summer. I don't know why.
Sports Time!
Carolina is playing Marshall right now. I am so fed up with this team. They really piss me off, it's not even funny. They don't know how to play basketball the way we play in Chapel Hill. Also, what is up with the Braves trading for Melky Cabrera? WTF? They don't need Melky as much as they need Vazquez, and they SHO could have unloaded DLowe before Vazquez. Red Sox have not made any moves since the hot shit idea to get Lackey. I still don't trust it, and I'll def miss Jaybay. My cuz was right - he can't carry an offense but he wasn't bad. Not by a long shot. VMart will have to deliver. (My multitude of nicknames amuses me. I think it's a sports-junkie thing.) I won't even talk about my Jets. Or really, even my Tar Heels. I kind of need the Celtics to stay where they are. I'll be watching them on Christmas day.
My Chanukah was wonderful! It's not my favorite holiday, but the story is so timeless and I love the tradition. As usual our first night was the best. We observe and pray on the other seven nights but we don't cook for the other ones. Who has the time?
I have been writing but I need to find a community to post in. It's completely original work - no fandom. I'm so afraid to write OOC that I haven't touched any fandoms in years. The last one I wrote was an Atlantis one, and it was all right. I was so scared to write Ronon wrong that I quit. He's very difficult. I will, however, continue to enjoy all the wonderful fanfic I stumble across!
Quick Book Rec: I just finished City of Oranges by Adam LeBor. It's about the city Jaffa in Israel, from 1921 to present day (2007). As a Jew, it totally changed my opinion on Palestine. A book has to be powerful to change my opinion completely. If you're into that, check it out.
Okay. Ramble done. I hope everyone's Chanukah was equally as festive and family-filled as mine, and that everyone's holidays are joyous and blessed!

So, I had possibly the worst week ever but then my Friday night was the best night ever and it made up for it :)
Went to the football game, my school's team is now in the playoffs! Our guys are beast. It was the first time I went to a football game NOT for the Tar Heels, and it was sooooooo great. Me and my pally Ray had so much fun being absolute lunatics, and I got to hang out with so many of my friends. The only bad thing was my friend was on a date at the game and she told me it was a total bust. I felt really bad cos we all had such a great time, and she said "I wish I would have been there by myself so I could've hung out with you guys. I would have had a better time."
Ouchhhhh. :( That's a sad face.
But I talked to my friend who lives in New York for a long time, which is always good. Listened to some Turin Brakes, which is always awesome. This weekend is kind of a homework weekend mashed up with family time. Should be interesting. I need to get a lot of work done cos I'm fairly behind. Also, me and TJ set a ridiculous goal of 50,000 words this month. Why the hell did we do that?
So, dreamAWAKE2534 on nanowrimo's site is my user, you can add me if you want.
Hoping this week starting last night can be a way to forget last week. A lot of bad things happened.

BTW, reading The First Rasta by Helene Lee, and it is great. She is a fantastic writer. I never knew a lot of this stuff about Rasta, cos for me it started with Haile Selassie I and then jumped to Bob Marley. Oh, and the other great thing is she litters lyrics of his every so often :)

Been listening to some new music (or if not new then new to me) - I got the Julio Iglesias album "La carretera" from the library. It's pretty good - I like the Rumba medley best. I also checked out four of The Boss's CDs, because the only one I have is his greatest hits. I love his line "the turnpike is an opera." Genius, genius. I also accidentally (for real) downloaded all of Cinema Bizarre's new album Toyz, or ToyZ. I didn't expect anything in particular going in, and it's pretty good, but the only song I cannot live without from that CD is "Blasphemy." I hate I Came 2 Party. I've heard it way way way too many times. Matisyahu's album drops on Tuesday, and I'm gonna get it right after school. Props to my Best Buy gift card I've been saving since December.
My Jets are on tomorrow. Get psyched. I might just make Mark Sanchez my favorite player depending on how he does this season. If not, I'll rake him over the coals just like everyone else. I giggled so hard after Brett Favre's "performance." God, he is a douche. He said the most insensitive thing ever - "If they were true Green Bay fans then they'd understand." No - if you were a true Green Bay player, you'd understand.
Been reading this old Star Wars book - The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton. In the beginning it was really really good, and I didn't want to stop reading it, but then it hit a massive wall and got so boring. Now it's picking up again - I have a quarter or less left of it and honestly just want it over with. I have better things to be reading, such as a copy of the Zohar Gramps let me borrow.
Josh Beckett, I love you so much, but sometimes I really hate you. This game could go either way for you, my friend.

As I discovered today, I am not the only one who has sided with Michael Vick. I may be the only white person who had any compassion for him from Day One, but I am not the only one who believes that Roger Goodell is getting very carried away. He spent two years in jail and God only knows what he went through. Yes, he lied to the Commish, he lied to everybody before (like all the juicers out there) eventually coming clean. But you know, what really shocked me was TO. Not that he was with Vick in all this, but that when he explained his reasons, THEY MADE SENSE! There were perfectly intelligent words spewing forth from the lips of our dear Terrell Owens! And honestly, he was right. People in this league have done far worse things TO HUMANS. A lot of people forget that all this shit happened to dogs. And I love dogs. But Michael Vick committed a gambling misdemeanor in the eyes of the law, and he served his time in both jail and a halfway house. His debt to society is paid.
Michael, I fully support you. I believe you are a good person. I believe in forgive, never forget, and I have forgiven you. You've been through hell, and you learned from it. Good luck in your future endeavors. Don't let us down.
Pete Rose. Would that I lived to see Pete Rose get reinstated and elected to the Hall of Fame. My dad told me the story about Pete Rose when I was about five, and I've never forgotten him since. Yes, he broke the cardinal NUMBER ONE unwritten rule of baseball, but he has the most hits in the history of hits. I think he deserves it, and my favorite player of all time (including Andruw Jones, Yunel Escobar, and El Senor Papi himself), Hank Aaron, believes that Pete deserves in too. He probably shouldn't be able to hold a job, but he needs to be in there. (And it's not only the Hammer, but Joe Morgan and several other important figures as well.)
I should have mentioned this earlier. RIP Vernon Forrest. I've never watched a whole boxing night in my life, but I know a bit about it. Not much. I do know that Vernon Forrest was shot seven times in the back, after being robbed at gunpoint, and he had a kid with him. I hope to God that the kid saw nothing. RIP man, nobody deserves that.
This year's Hall of Fame class was great (although sans DALE MURPHY - don't get me started). Jim Rice, dubbed by Steve Czaban as an OTHOFFer (One-Team Hall of Famer), gave us so many good years with the Sox. And that story about the four year old is amazing! Thank you Jim Rice, you are a great person, and a lot more kids should look up to you than currently do.
Ahh, Rickey. Rickey being Rickey. I have heard some great stories about you. I was impressed by your speech; you left a really great, lasting impression on sports. As Tony Kornheiser said, that you were "impossible," you are still one of the greatest that ever played. Props to you.
All right. Almost done.

I became a fan of reggae about three or four years ago, and it has stuck with me since. So if someone asked me what new music they might like to try, here's what I would offer up:
Bob Marley
His music is timeless, and it captures the heart of basically anyone who listens to him. Contrary to the beliefs of some, he is not purely afro-centric, he is there for all sufferahs. In all of his songs, it feels like he's speaking to you, only you. He's the King of Reggae for a reason.
My favorite (if I can choose): Could You Be Loved, among many, many others
Damian "Junior Gong" Marley
Only one of Bob's eleven children, Jr. Gong's style is the most unique of all. He may not sound as close to his father vocally as maybe Stephen or Ziggy, but you can hear the message as clearly as if you were listening to Bob. He uses the style of toasting, the "Jamaican predecessor to rap." He's a little difficult to understand until you get the hang of it if you are not a native, but his words are loud and clear.
My favorite: Welcome to Jamrock and The Mission feat. Stephen Marley
Lucky Dube
I haven't had the chance to check out a lot of his music, but "Feel Irie" is one of my favorite songs. It's so sad that he died at such a young age like Bob, but same as the King, this man had a lot to say.
My favorite: Feel Irie
Supercat
Again, I haven't heard that many of his songs, but he stands out. He's one of the few reggae musicians who is not a locksman as well. I love his style, and he brings a very different but very positive sound to the table. Check him out!
My favorite: Don Dada
Matisyahu
He is a Hasidic Jewish reggae artist, and as a Conservative Jew myself, I really love his stuff. But like Bob Marley, his sound is not just for Jews. He is a worldly man, and his message is very simple but very strong. Many of his songs have brought tears to my eyes. Big up to this man for challenging the percieved status quo of reggae.
My favorite: Time of Your Song, One Day
Jah bless!

Name fifteen books you've read that will always stay with you, and don't take too much time to think about it. (the first fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes). Copy this into your own post.
1. Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley - Timothy White
I can't imagine my life without Nesta. White did an amazing job of chronicling his life. It was all true but some of it was so strange! It just goes to show how Bob really was a prophet. Rest in Peace, King of Reggae, Prophet of God.
2. The Godfather - Mario Puzo
Need I say more? This book is such a staple. I read this and then went back and read it again. It is so amazing. Something about Puzo's writing just lends itself to reality. It was probably based off real things too - I lived in New Jersey; trust me, I know. Anyways, awesome book.
3. The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
I had seen a lot of people reading this book and I had no idea what it would be like. Little did I know, I would identify with the main character Amir, put off reading the end so it wouldn't have to be over, and cry for ten minutes afterwards when it was done. Please, please read this book.
4. The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkein
My first introduction to real books. I was nine when I read LOTR and The Hobbit. To that point I'd been in that phase reading books that were written for my age group, and aside from the fantastic Jedi Apprentice series, I didn't like them. I don't even have to describe these. FRODO LIVES.
5. The Phantom of the Opera - Gaston Leroux
I watched the musical before I read the book and it amazes me how smoothly it transitioned to film. Excellent writing and story on the part of Leroux - the whole plot was pretty absurd but it read like it could happen! I want to read it again, just have to find time...
6. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
First Austen book I ever read, and aside for a few sections where my attention just wasn't held, this is one of the best books of all time in my opinion. Me and my mom talk about these characters pretty frequently - I'm nervous to read anything else by her for fear that it won't live up to this masterpiece. A classic.
7. The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and the Lost Art of Livin' - Bill Zehme
I've loved Frank Sinatra since I was a little kid, I grew up with his music. I didn't know my mom had this book and when I read it I was introduced to both Sinatra, King and Ol Blue Eyes, Human. His quirks were so interesting to read about. Who doesn't love this Jersey boy???
8. The Secret Life of Bees - Sue Monk Kidd
I read this in an afternoon on a summer day - perfect timing. I've been told this is a great mother daughter book, and I agree, but from a solo perspective, I just couldn't stop reading. I just couldn't.
9. Shoeless Joe - WP Kinsella
This is the book that Field of Dreams is based on. I loved this book so much. I am a diehard Sox fan, but more than that, I love the game of baseball. It's one of those eerie yet somehow warming books. Both the book and movie are soul soothers.
10. Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
I thought I was going to hate this book. HOWEVER I loved it. And I really can't explain why.
11. Now I Can Die in Peace - Bill Simmons
The first sportswriting book that I laughed at. This is the funniest book I have ever read. I now follow BIll Simmons on espn.com. He is a very talented writer. More than that, he's hysterical. Great journalism.
12. Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia - Stephen Fried
Every girl should read this book.
13. The Outsiders - SE Hinton
I read this in the 7th grade, and it has the poem in it with the line "nothing gold can stay," and then Johnny says "Stay gold." For the rest of my middle school career, that line graced every yearbook. Stay gold. Stay gold.
14. Vengeance - George Jonas
This is a book about an Israeli counterterrorist squad, after the awful events of the 72 Munich Olympics. As a Jew, Avner (not the real name of the man, for the man and the events are real) definitely struck a chord with me. Again, wonderful journalism. It read like fiction - sadly everything did happen.
15. Master and Commander - Patrick O'Brian
My dad introduced me to this series. I will always have a giggle whenever I hear Aubrey and Maturin. What great characters, what great plots, what great detail!

Yeah, don't have a better title.
It's only been a one week summer for me thus far and i have worked every day of it. I hate this. But with hard work comes play, and soon I'll be traveling and basically living out of a suitcase for the better part of three months. And I love to travel. A lot.
I did pass the two classes I was ripping my hair out for - both with very high Cs. Unfortunately almost anywhere else in the world they would be low Bs, except our wonderful school system operates on the 7 point scale. Boo. However I won't bitch, because I was really really scared about them. Can't wait for the report card, because I know that a majority of my classes will come bearing good news.
On books: I have just finished two very, very good books - Have Gun, Will Travel by Ronin Ro, and Dread Talk: The Language of Rastafari by Velma Pollard. The former was about Death Row Records and how they started and finished - if you don't already know, go look it up or better yet read this book, and the latter was about Dread Talk vs Jamaican Creole and both vs Jamaican Standard English. The poetry in it was very good. I am now on a short book about Kabbalah that Gramps loaned me, and I hope to finish before I see him again later this month.
On music: I finally was able to get the Springsteen CD from the library, it's been out forever - got his greatest hits on there, and I do love my Jersey boys. I also found a reggaeton artist by the name of Don Omar "Da Hitman." Love his song with JLo, Hold You Down. Y me gusta la cancion con Aventura (Ella Y Yo) tambien. Still listening to Damian Marley. Jr. Gong just has it.
On sports, because I can't have a serious discussion with myself without involving sports: Let's divide it up.
Baseball: I'm so excited to go see the Sox in July, at the Fen. We look good, but of course we could look better. I still have faith in Papi, as I always will. Sammy Sosa has let me down; he was my favorite out of the triumvirate of eventually discredited sluggers. I think that I want the other 102 names released, no matter how painful it will be. If the season ended today (I hate that, but yet I love using it), the SanFran Giants would be the Wild Card. God help us.
Basketball: Just go read Bill Simmons's (The Sports Guy) article on Kobe at espn.com. That really explains everything for me. As a Celtics fan I hate LA as it is, and I wanted Orlando to win to rep the Eastern Conference, but yet again, I was let down. Something about this finals was weird, and Simmons hit the nail on the head. Go read it.
Football: Donte Stallworth, 30 days. It just doesn't click. I like what Brendan Haywood (yesss) said - he's not a judge, but that sounds a little lenient. I won't judge either. My condolences to the family of the victim. I love NFL Live's Wheel of Favre. Very funny, and Golic in the Vikings helmet was hilarious.
Hockey: The Devils didn't win, so I'm upset as it is, but this finals I was torn between family. Gramps is a diehard Red Wings fan, and so I pulled for him, but my cousin Andrew would kill for the Pens. Either way I won, but still, NJ, come on please! Pittsburgh deserved to win; they outfought Detroit.
Golf: Bethpage Black is ridiculously funny this time. Look at all that rain! Haha, sucks to be them. I'm just having a giggle. My favorite is Padraig Harrington, but of course I'm pulling for Phil (who isn't). My aunt has breast cancer, so of course Lefty and his family are in my thoughts particularly. Jah bless all of them. I am so excited to see how this Open turns out.
Soccer: I am close to becoming a sinner in Rome's eyes - I watched Bend it Like Beckham and one of my good friend's soccer games, and I was slightly entertained. Oh God. I have a Michael Ballack (Germany/Chelsea) jersey, and thus I figure I should like him best. He looks like an ass.
I'm done, don't complain - this was for me after all.
Have a wonderful summer/weekend, and be safe!

I just downloaded my first Johnny Cash songs.
Mostly because John Sheppard's constant fascination with them makes me curious.
I've heard these before, but I need to see if I want more.
I just got back from a minor league baseball game. You poor boys. You make me wish all of you could make it back. I left in the bottom sixth, and it was pretty much over. But it was really fun, my dad's friend Chad was there and he was really funny.
Even if he is a cohort in the Evil Empire.
My exams start Thursday, and I'm pretty ready for this shit school year to be over. Next year will be so much better. I can feel it. As soon as this ridiculous chemistry class is over, I will feel a heavy burden LIFT off my shoulders.
I have to go try and finish this book, Reggae, Rasta, Revolution - it's really good, but I haven't had the time/dedication to just knock it out. I have three more library books left, and they're due soon, so this one MUST GO.
Hope anyone who actually reads this is enjoying the weather - it is very pleasant down here, if just a little too hot.

Normally I'd go with Catch a Fire, (not just because I love Bob Marley with all my soul), but this time I'm going to say The Kite Runner. It shatters a lot of preconceptions that I think many people have about not only Muslim culture/ways but life in the Middle East (especially under Taliban rule) in general. Add to that the fact that it is a piece of superb writing and there you have it: literary masterpiece.
Oh, and I did cry for about ten minutes after it was done. Maybe I thought that it was such a good book because I related to the main character in a lot of ways.
Anyways, great book. Start reading with an open mind. If you have ideas in place already of what it should be like or might be like, it ruins the experience.

I was very, very wrong. I can't believe that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tar Heels Men's Basketball Team is the 2009 NCAA Tournament Champion.
They did it, Tyler's Quest is complete, and now we can sleep in peace. I'm not even going to talk about the game, because admit it, there was only one nation stressing, and that was ours, because we know there's always a chance that one or two bonehead-moves later we'll be losing. But after a while Michigan State just had no chance.
My dad's friend AJ is a Spartan, and he was really classy about their loss. All the Spartans were, and it was not luck that got them into the championship game. They knocked off TWO number one seeds, and they were trying for three. We just caught them on a bad night is all.
I have all the respect in the world for Tom Izzo, btw.
So I cried, because I was just so goddamn happy! I couldn't believe that four years after that finky freshman class came in and nobody knew what to expect here we are, champions of what is arguably the greatest tournament. I went through a lot in four years, so did they, and so did everybody. But looking back, as the cliche goes, it all went so fast. Too fast.
I am going to miss Tyler Hansbrough, my hero for what could be the worst four years of my life. I'm a Cs fan, but whatever team he goes to I'll be watching. He deserves everything in the world.
They won for my grandfather, who is recovering from prostate cancer. They won for my aunt, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. They won for my dad, who seemingly has no peace of mind unless he is watching sports (that apple didn't fall far from the fuckin tree), they won for Roy Williams.
And Good Ol' Roy...
That game was for you most of all.
In other good news, while I sat at my aunt's house me and my cousin Andrew watched the Red Sox beat the Halos. As usual Pap had to be dramatic about it ;)

In case you were hiding under a rock, Carolina beat Duke Sunday. By sort of a lot. And Tyler Hansbrough looked like a fucking beast. I'm going to miss him so much. I cried when he did.
T.O. signed with the Bills, I know, and I watched no less than six different reports on the matter, but does someone wanna explain this shit to me? The BILLS? I realize that about 20 teams immediately said they didn't want him. Fuck the Bills. Go Jets.
And...the Sox signed Lester. I believe the comment I posted on the Boston blog was something along the lines of "Not gonna lie - when I found out, I danced a freakin jig." I remember all of Lester's years, I remember everything. And he deserves everything he gets :). Love him to death.

And so, in the epic showdown at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the valiant North Carolina Tar Heels faltered, but they most certainly did not fail. This game had it all.
Haha not really. It did have Carolina winning :) That makes me so happy. I always get nervous about these games. Now Psycho's won at Cameron all four years that he's played there. That's gotta be like some kind of a record. It's great for us either way. Now we just have to win at home on Senior Night. Then we'd get the sweep of the series and that would be even better.
And Wake lost to State. Which I don't think that was supposed to happen. State's not all that great this year. But they had us on our toes. Wake plays FSU next, and I have Florida State winning that one. Any takers?
